“The Artist” is a story composed by the Japanese writer Shiga Naoya. This story shows the old thinking of teacher and parents toward the students. The teacher and parents think that spending time except study is only wasted time.

In this story, Seibei is a twelve years old school going student who was great passionately interested in collecting gourds. He is not interested in studying and playing with the students. After class, he usually wondered about the town looking for gourds. He would sit cross-legged in the corner of the living room working on his newly acquired fruit.

He used to walk everywhere in the search of gourds but his father didn’t like his son’s work whatever Seibel was doing. He wanted his son to give up this unwanted was. Seibei’s father didn’t want to listen to any complaints of his son. One day Seibei purchases an attractive gourd from an old woman and goes to school with it. He starts polishing it under his desk but Seibel is caught red-handed by his class teacher. The teacher became very angry with Seibei.

The teacher took the gourd with him and followed Seibei to his home and complained to his parents against Seibei. The parents of Seibei scolded him very badly and broke all the gourds. At last, by forcibly he made his to give up that work and that things. Thus we see that the teacher and parents didn’t care for the interest of the child. The is an injustice to children.

इस कहानी में, सेबई एक बारह साल का स्कूल जाने वाला छात्र है जो बड़े चाव से लौकी की तरह दिखने वाला एक प्रकार का गुद्देदार फल इकट्ठा करने में रुचि रखता था। उसे छात्रों के साथ अध्ययन करने और खेलने में कोई दिलचस्पी नहीं है। कक्षा के बाद, वह आमतौर पर लौकी की तलाश में शहर के आस-पास बाजार में घूमता था। वह अपने घर के कमरे के कोने में पैर पर पैर रखकर अपने लाये हुए नये फल पर काम करता नज़र आएगा।

वह हर जगह लौकी की तलाश में घूमता था लेकिन उसके पिता ने अपने बेटे के काम को पसंद नहीं किया जो सेबई कर रहा था। वह चाहता था कि उसका बेटा इस अवांछित काम को छोड़ दे। सेबई के पिता अपने बेटे की कोई शिकायत नहीं सुनना चाहते थे। एक दिन सेबई एक बूढ़ी औरत से एक आकर्षक लौकी खरीदता है और उसे अपने साथ स्कूल ले जाता है। वह इसे अपने डेस्क के नीचे चमकाने लगता है लेकिन सेबई अपने वर्ग-शिक्षक के सामने रंगे हाथों पकड़ा जाता है। शिक्षक सेबई से बहुत नाराज हो गए।

शिक्षक अपने साथ लौकी लेकर सेबई के घर पर गया और सेबई के खिलाफ उसके माता-पिता से शिकायत की। सेबई के पिता ने उसे बहुत बुरी तरह से डाटा और सभी लौकी को हथौड़े से तोड़ दी। अंत में, जबरन उससे उस काम और उस चीज़ को छोड़ देने के लिए मजबूर किया गया। इसप्रकार हम देखते हैं कि शिक्षक और माता-पिता ने बच्चे के हित की परवाह नहीं की। यह बच्चों के साथ एक अन्याय है।
